Talk about total immersion... these kids were into it!
A great time was had by all! Our field trip to the PCC East Campus EPICenter was one for the History books. We really had a great time. We did some 3D printing and learned about some new technology. Check out the glasses and other creations we made with 3D printer pens. Talk about total immersion... these kids were into it! They have invited us to come back and learn more about STEM and we plan on taking them up on their offer!

Study Island Blue Ribbon Challenge What is Study Island? Study Island is an online learning platform that provides 3rd-8th grade students at TCDS the opportunity to grow in their grade level Arizona State Standards in Math, English Langauge Arts, and Science. What is a Blue Ribbon? Students earn a Blue Ribbon when they achieve mastery of a single grade level standard. Every 3rd-8th grade student is expected to earn 100% of their grade level Blue Ribbons in Math, English Language Arts, and Science by May 3rd, 2019. What’s the Blue Ribbon Challenge? The Blue Ribbon Challenge is two-fold:
When does the Blue Ribbon Challenge Take Place? August 27th, 2018 – May 3rd, 2019 When will my child be working on Study Island? Students will have periodic opportunities to work on Study Island at school and will be expected to work at home as well. TCDS offers “Open Lab” to students after school hours in order to work on Study Island. This is a free service and is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:50-3:50 beginning the week of September 4th. Parents are to request an “Open Lab” sign up slip from their child’s teacher in order for their child to participate. Questions about the Blue Ribbon Challenge? Contact Blue Ribbon Challenge Coordinator Debbie Ross at [email protected] Can you believe we're about to put this school year into the History books!?! It seems like just last month we were getting used to you wearing different colored uniforms.
This week in 7/8 Technology we will be enjoying the movies we've made. In 6th Technology we'll be traveling the globe discovering what our classmates have found. Here's to a great summer vacation and for those of you in 7th grade and below, we hope to see you the next school year! We do not need to hold an extra day of school!
The State is allowing schools that can show they have enough minutes in their annual schedule without making up days missed during the walkout to count total minutes instead of total days. We have extra minutes so we do not need to have school on Friday, May 25. Our last day of school, as planned, is Thursday, May 24. **** **** **** Our Parent Survey is still open! If you haven't completed the survey, please take a few minutes to do so today. Your feedback and comments are EXTREMELY important to us. Once you've finished the survey, please let your child's teacher know. The grade level with the highest percent of participation wins an Eegees party. We will count survey participation through next Friday, May 18. You can take the survey here => tinyurl.com/tcds2018 April 24, 2018
Dear Tucson Country Day School Parents and Guardians, We thank you for your patience as we have talked with our teachers and staff to assess the impact of Thursday’s scheduled walkout. Based on the information we have received from our employees, the Administrative team and members of the School Board are in agreement that we will close the K-8 portion of the school on Thursday. Since the RedforEd movement does not impact the private tuition-based Early Education program, our preschool and prekindergarten will run a regular school day on Thursday. As you know, per our school calendar, the entire school will be closed on Friday. Our decision to close the school on Thursday is based on the number of teachers and staff members who will be absent from school and our concern about our ability to provide adequate supervision and ensure the safety of all students. The State requires us to be in session for 180 days each school year or risk being penalized and lose funding. Our calendar is a 180-day calendar so we will need to make up the day we are closed. Adding one day to the school calendar means we will be in session on Friday, May 25. We will provide you with additional updates as they become available. As of this time, we plan to be in session on Monday. We will keep you informed. The most current and accurate information will be posted on the school’s eplanner page as noted above. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Your Tucson Country Day School Administration Team, Cindy Kappler Adrian Hannah Jordan Krause Chief Operations Officer Principal Assistant Principal Parent Survey
If you haven't taken the survey yet, we encourage you to take a few minutes to fill it out. We want to hear from every family. We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to let us know your thoughts about many different topics relating to TCDS. The survey takes about ten minutes. This year, we are running a contest to see if we can increase the number of families who take the survey. The grade level with the highest percentage of participation will receive an Eegee's party. YUM! Click this link => https://tinyurl.com/tcds2018 to get started now! Then please let your child's teacher know you've taken the survey so you can be counted in the contest. It's that easy! Rodeos and Olympiads

Students should come to school in athletic wear, with their house color shirt or an Olympiad shirt on. *Please remember the dress code, no spaghetti straps or racer back tank tops, and all shorts must be at least the length of the middle finger when the student’s arm is extended straight down the side of their leg. Welcome back!
We are kicking off the new year with Kodu projects 3 & 4 in 7/8 Tech and are wrapping up our All About Me!! projects in 6th grade Tech. School-wide announcements: Lunch Detention for Missing/Low Quality Work and Behavior Issues At TCDS, we believe tasks and assignments given to students have value. We expect students to complete tasks and assignments in a quality manner and on time. When this does not happen, we believe students should be held accountable for getting their work done. To this end, we are implementing a new lunch detention program designed to keep students on track and encourage them to complete work in a timely manner. A teacher, crew leader or administrator can assign a student to lunch detention for one or more pieces of missing or low quality work. When a student is assigned, parents will be notified by email. Students assigned to lunch detention are expected to bring their lunch and their missing/low quality work to the MPR at the beginning of the lunch period. They will be supervised by an administrator. If a student does not report to the MPR for an assigned lunch detention, one additional detention will be assigned and parents will be notified. We are confident this approach will encourage students to turn in quality work on time as we know students would rather spend their lunch time with their friends than an administrator. Students can also be assigned to lunch detention for behavior issues in class. We appreciate your support. Please contact an administrator if you have any questions about this new policy. The What and Why Behind Standards Based Grading
Attention TCDS Parents and Family: Administration is hosting a parent information meeting to present the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind Standards Based Grading. This gathering will take place in the MPR, on Monday, January 8th from 4:30-5:30, and on Tuesday, January 9th, from 3:30-4:30. Bring your questions and concerns. We hope to see you there. TCDS Administration In 7/8 Technology we are currently doing some computer aided drafting using a program called Sketch Up. This is a fun way to get to know how the architectural plans are designed. Just what exactly goes into creating a structure?
In 6th grade Technology we have wrapped up our All About Me presentations and are moving into Google Earth. Now that we have gotten to know each other better, we will learn more about the planet on which we live. Discovering and studying new and exciting places is fun. News from the school: -TCDS annual pumpkin patch Friday, October 27th Each year TCDS holds a special Pumpkin Patch here on campus. All classes participate and join us down on the field to pick out a pumpkin and join in other fun activities. Pumpkins are $5 each, only 1 pumpkin per child. K-5th grade students should wear their school uniform under their costume or bring their uniform clothes to change into after the parade is over. Middle School students are welcome to wear appropriate costumes throughout the whole day. Please no scary/gory masks, blood or weapons. The 2016-2017 school year is almost in the History books.
In 6th grade Technology we are finishing up our GoogleEarth Project so we can all learn more about the world in which we live. Pretty cool. In 7th / 8th grade Technology we just finished our Urban Legends Project where we learned that not everything on the internet is true as well as media phenomena. Then we moved on to our last project - Build Your Own Project. This one allows us to have the freedom of choice. We are excited to see what they come up with this year! We have had a great and interesting year. We are looking forward to meeting the 5th graders next year. For those 6th and 7th graders - we'll see you next year too. To the 8th graders: you will be missed! Good luck to you and don't forget to come back and say, "hi" and share your successes and failures with us. We have both triumphed and fallen this year, laughed and cried together this year and we would love to see how your story turns out. We'll miss you. TCDS Art is requesting your help...
Can you please help us hang art at the Pima County Fair? This year we will be displaying artwork from Preschool-8th grade. On Saturday, April 8th starting at 10am we will be hanging art at the fairgrounds in the Old Pueblo building. Please contact Mrs. Phelps at [email protected] if you have questions. Thank you! We will study our planet with images as well as researching a place of their choice. Then we'll wrap that up with a creative portion of the project where they will make up their own realistic geographic location based on what they have learned in their research. 7th and 8th Grade Technology have started learning how to code using block code. After all, who wouldn't like making their own video game? But first we have to know what goes on behind that cool new game. We are pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz to see what really makes that cool new video game so cool. We are currently wrapping up our Movie Maker Projects in 7/8th grade Technology. Friday the 27th we hope to be watching the movies we've made. Our next project will be to learn some coding and make some video games.

This 6th grade rotation, a trimester really, runs from August 10th through November 4th. We are off to a grand start this year in Technology!
Be sure to ask about your student's typing speed. We are practicing with the home row keys - remember them? Before all this texting we used to be able to type with all of our fingers! We are also studying the latest and greatest of the technological world in our Current Events Project. Ask your student what new, cool techno gadgets they found in their research. There really is some interesting stuff coming out soon. Keep up the great work Tech students. |
